On a Sunday afternoon that was meant to be a quiet Father’s Day, I found myself back in the studio, compelled by the gravity of unfolding events in the Middle East. The news demanded a broadcast, and as rockets rained down on Tel Aviv and Israel executed precision strikes deep into Iran, the world stood at a pivotal moment. Joined by Dr. Rob Lindsted in Jordan, Aharon Levarko on the ground in Israel, and Annie Cyrus, an Iranian-born expert on the region, we unpacked a situation that could reshape the geopolitical landscape—or squander a historic opportunity due to misguided diplomacy.
Israel’s Relentless Campaign
Israel’s Operation Standing Lion, as it’s being called, has brought the Iranian regime to its knees. With strikes reaching as far as Mashhad Airport—2,300 kilometers from Israel’s borders—the Israeli Air Force has achieved air supremacy over Iran. Aharon Levarko, reporting from Israel, confirmed the devastating toll: 14 confirmed dead, up to 100 wounded, and entire neighborhoods in Tel Aviv reduced to rubble by Iranian ballistic missiles. Yet, Israel’s response has been surgical, targeting military, nuclear, and oil infrastructure while avoiding civilian areas. As Aharon noted, “We’re hitting hard in retaliation… making incredible inroads in ways you would never imagine.”
The sophistication of Israel’s strategy is staggering. Decades in the making, their operations include covert smuggling of equipment and intelligence gathering, reminiscent of the 20-year planning behind the Hezbollah pager operation. Annie Cyrus highlighted the role of Iran’s internal opposition, with freedom-loving Persians coordinating protests and even car bombings, such as the one in Tajrish, Tehran, that killed Iran’s chief of intelligence. The Iranian people, led by figures from the Mahsa Amini uprising, are rising up, chanting “Death to Khamenei, forever King Pahlavi” in the streets of Tehran and beyond.
A Regime on the Ropes
The Islamic Republic of Iran is teetering. Khamenei and his sons have reportedly fled to an underground bunker in Mashhad, a desperate move that Annie suggests was a miscalculation. “They trapped him,” she said, noting that the IRGC may have deliberately sidelined Khamenei to seize control. The Iranian Air Force, composed of ordinary Iranians rather than IRGC jihadists, appears to be abandoning its posts, with five pilots reported missing in action. The regime’s threats grow louder—IRGC General Moser Rezaei warned of actions that could “destabilize the entire region”—but Annie dismissed these as empty bluffs, a hallmark of a cornered regime.
Israel’s momentum is undeniable. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has signaled that no option, including targeting Khamenei, is off the table. As Aharon put it, “We’ve got the momentum. We’ve got to keep on going.” Analysts suggest the regime could collapse within a week, potentially ushering in a new era for Iran, led by figures like Prince Pahlavi, who represents the aspirations of a people yearning for freedom.
The Misguided Push for Diplomacy
Yet, amidst this historic opportunity, President Donald Trump’s insistence on diplomacy is raising eyebrows. Reports indicate he vetoed Israel’s plan to eliminate Khamenei and is pushing for negotiations, citing past “deals” with India-Pakistan, Serbia-Kosovo, and Egypt-Ethiopia. In a recent post on X, Trump wrote, “Iran and Israel should make a deal and will make a deal… We will have peace soon between Israel and Iran.” He’s reportedly engaging Putin and Qatari leaders as mediators, a move that baffles those on the ground.
Annie Cyrus was blunt: “Nobody cares about your ego, Mr. President… This is about good versus evil.” She argued that Trump’s pursuit of a deal is driven by a desire to cement his legacy as a peacemaker, potentially at the expense of Israel and the Iranian people. “He’s enabling the Islamic regime,” she warned, predicting that neither Iran nor Israel will view America as an ally if Trump persists. Aharon echoed her concerns, questioning whether Trump is “selling Israel out” or sacrificing the Iranian people for financial motives, given his recent Middle East deals reportedly netting a trillion dollars.
Dr. Rob Lindsted, stranded in Jordan due to the closure of Tel Aviv’s airport, framed the issue in biblical terms. Referencing Ezekiel 38, he sees Russia’s role—offering refuge to fleeing Iranian leaders—as a troubling alignment of nations. “This is not negotiation; this is compromise,” he said, emphasizing that negotiating with a regime that targets civilians while Israel avoids them is a moral failure.
A Call for Clarity
The stakes couldn’t be higher. Iran’s targeting of a synagogue in retaliation for Israel’s strike on the IRGC headquarters underscores the regime’s depravity. As Annie put it, “You tell me whose side we should pick today.” The Iranian people are risking their lives—16 have already been arrested by the IRGC for supporting Israel or cheering the war. Israel, battered by war fatigue and civilian losses, cannot afford to let up, especially with the nuclear threat looming. Aharon raised the chilling possibility: “Does [Khamenei] have a surprise up his sleeve? A nuclear weapon?”
For Americans, the question is whether we grasp the gravity of this moment. Annie estimates that only 10-15% of Americans understand that negotiating with “butchers” is a mistake, while the MAGA movement, in her view, has become a “cult” blind to Trump’s missteps. I pray she’s wrong. I’ve always supported Trump when he’s right, but as a broadcaster with 35 years of credibility, I’m not in the tank for anyone but the truth. If Trump continues to push for talks, he risks looking “extremely foolish,” as I noted, propping up a losing team with no players left.
A Path Forward
Israel doesn’t need American boots on the ground—a position I’ve consistently held. Sell them the tools they need, provide intelligence, and let them finish the job. If we must assist, let it be with missile defense, billed to a wealthy ally who can repay us with technology or intelligence. But above all, get out of Israel’s way. As Annie urged, “Step one, get out of Israel’s way. Step two, stop talking to the mullahs. Step three, bring the prince in front of the fireplace.”
The Iranian people deserve freedom. Israel deserves security. America deserves a foreign policy that doesn’t compromise with evil for the sake of a deal. As we pray for the people of Israel and Iran, let’s also pray for wisdom in Washington. And, in the spirit of the late Dr. Jimmy DeYoung, let’s half-jokingly pray that, if it’s God’s will, one of Iran’s errant missiles takes out the Al-Aqsa Mosque, paving the way for a new chapter in Jerusalem.
